THINKING PIAZZA GARIBALDI
Thinking Piazza Garibaldi brings together the teaching experiences, workshops, and laboratories developed since 2023 at the University of Naples Federico II, Department of Architecture, within the CODE degree program, focusing on Piazza Garibaldi as a case study. So far, Piazza Garibaldi has been explored in the Design Laboratory for Habitat Sustainability, led by Professors Paola Scala and Katia Fabbricatti, as well as in the workshop Discovering Piazza Garibaldi: Intensive Workshop on the Informal City. Design Laboratory for Habitat Sustainability The Design Laboratory for Habitat Sustainability provides students with theoretical, methodological, and practical tools for designing collective spaces. The aim is to manage the relationship between user needs, built environment performance, and technology, considering the evolving community structures of contemporary society. The focus is on resilience and habitat sustainability. Students develop projects modeled after "Eclectic Atlases", offering complex interpretations that lead to key project questions, which then guide the creation of site-specific design processes. Discovering Piazza Garibaldi: Intensive Workshop on the Informal City This workshop, part of the ERASMUS+ program, was a collaboration between the University of Naples Federico II and the University of Nicosia. Led by Professors Paola Scala, M. Hadjisoteriou, A. Swiny, and T. Tourvas, students from both universities engaged in mapping the informal aspects of Piazza Garibaldi. Through field visits and thematic lectures, they created initial interpretations and project suggestions for this complex urban space. Working in groups, the students presented manifestos and slideshows to communicate potential ideas and visions for Piazza Garibaldi
